INVITATION TO SUBMIT: Special Issue: Gender and Intersectionality in Engineering

Call for papers for a Special Issue of GST: “Gender and Intersectionality in Engineering”

Editors: Carol Morris, Alice Moncaster

This Special Issue of the “International Journal of Gender, Science and Technology” will focus on the issue of gender, including gender intersecting with other diversity (intersectionality), in engineering. Published in 2019 to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the Women’s Engineering Society, we are interested in publishing both academic papers and industry or education case studies. In so doing we hope to bring together the widest perspectives.

Empirical research and theoretical papers of 5000 - 8000 words are sought in the following broad areas:

  • Gendered experiences of higher education in engineering.
  • Explorations of the relationship between cultural norms, subject choices at school, and career choices.
  • Insights and research into the elements that have historically limited diversity within engineering.
  • The ‘leaky pipeline’, and the lack of diversity in leadership positions.
  • Comparisons between engineering and other disciplines and industries, or between engineering professions in different countries, to uncover specific differences and similarities.
  • Statistical analyses of published datasets.

Case studies 2000 – 3000 words are sought which explore:

  • Descriptions and evidence of impact of individual initiatives within education (primary, secondary and tertiary) to increase the diversity of students intending to take engineering, or to improve the experience of minority students studying engineering
  • Descriptions and evidence of impact of individual initiatives within industry to increase diversity and progression of minority engineers
  • Studies of initiatives which have not worked are equally valuable.

We also welcome submissions of relevant book reviews.  If you wish to submit a book review, please contact the editors first to check the suitability for this special issue.

Submission process

You are strongly encouraged to get in touch with the editors by 30 April 2018 with an intention to submit and a title. We expect and hope that there will be a number of industry contributors to this Special Issue as well as academic authors, and would be happy to support new authors in developing their abstract and paper by the deadline.

The deadline for abstracts is 31 May 2018. All abstracts will be reviewed and feedback/support offered.

Authors invited to submit full papers will need to log in to the journal and follow the 5-step submission process.

The deadline for submission of full papers is 30 September 2018.

When preparing your paper for submission you should consult the author guidelines: A short online tutorial illustrating the submission process is also available via the link above.
